In celebration of the 35th International Coastal Cleanup Day, a simultaneous underwater cleanup will be held in different points in the seas of Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu on Saturday, September 19, 2020.
The activity, dubbed as Scubasurero 2020, is bannered with the theme “Balik Turismo: Kadagatan – Limpyuhan Ko.”
At least 200 pre-registered divers will be deployed in 14 different dive sites in Lapu-Lapu City waters including areas near Olango Island.
A kickoff program will be held at around 6 A.M. in Angasil Port, Lapu-Lapu City wherein key officials will be present to give their messages of support including Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan, Department of Tourism (DOT) 7 Regional Director Shalimar Tamano and Lapu-Lapu Tourism, Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission (TCHAC) Chairman Cindi King-Chan.
Scubasurero is a synchronized coastal and dive cleanup operation wherein a team of environmentally-concerned divers will collect plastic wastes, cans, metals, and other debris found underwater. It is aimed at increasing awareness in keeping our seawaters clean among communities.
The event hopes to also encourage communities to take appropriate actions on current environmental issues and concerns, promoting behavioural change towards sustainable development.
Aside from the TCHAC and the DOT 7, the event is organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Lapu-Lapu City Police Office, Maritime Police, MS Boat Inc., and Ocean Conservancy.
