The Securities and Exchange Commission-Cebu Extension Office intensifies its campaign against investment scams by urging the public to become investor champions as Investor Protection Week starts.
โAn investor champion is a smart investor who realizes the benefits of sustainable investing, recognizes and avoids fraudulent investment schemes and advocates for financial literacy and investor protection,โ Atty. Alma Marie Estrada-Dalena said on Friday, November 5, during a zoom media conference.

SEC Cebu will be joining the rest of the Commission in celebrating the Investor Protection Week starting on Nov. 8 until 12, this year with the theme โSECure the future through Smart and Sustainable Investment.โ
In a kick-off activity on Friday, SEC officials in Cebu through a zoom press conference launched the โMaging Investor Championโ campaign video that encourages the public in becoming investor champions.
World-class triathletes Nikko Huelgas and Kim Remolino were introduced as investor champions. The two athletes expressed their full support to the campaign and urged the public to always check with SEC on legitimate investments.
Atty. Sheara Tamayo, Director, SEC-CEO
Newly-appointed SEC Cebu Director Atty. Sheara Lupango-Tamayo said this is the first time that the Commission partnered with the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) in the World Investor Week (WIW) from October 4 to 10.
The WIW is a global campaign that encourages securities regulators to put a spotlight to promote investor protection.
Lupango-Tamayo encouraged the public to secure their financial future by becoming smart investors.
She also enjoined the media in helping disseminate information for the public to make wise decisions and avoid getting into fraudulent schemes.
There are a variety of legitimate and accessible investment options where Filipinos can place their hard-earned money, such as stocks, bonds, government securities and mutual funds.
The IPW started when President Rodrigo Duterte signed Proclamation No. 846, series of 2019 declaring the second week of November of every year as โInvestor Protection Week.โ
SEC Information Officer Ms. Vanessa Almeda
Starting next week, series of webinars will be held to educate the public on how to spot and avoid investment scams.
