The Visayas Art Fair is gearing up for a big comeback in 2022 as the region’s best artists prepare to showcase the best of what the local art scene has to offer. From November 24 to 27, 2022, the best creative minds in the industry will gather at the Oakridge Business Park to partake in a series of exhibits, installations, live performances, and more.
All weekend long, a variety of events and showcases make up the festivities of this regional celebration of art. The weekend will feature a series of art talks featuring the likes of Emmanuel Garibay, an expressionist artist whose works are inspired heavily by social and political commentary, who will be speaking on his work with the Linangan Art Residency Program on November 25 (Friday) from 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Immediately following that, there will also be a panel discussion centered on the idea of utilizing space and the role it plays in the evolution of visual arts entitled Artist-Run Galleries: In Community. The panel will be moderated by Claudine Impas of Florentino’s Art Gallery and will feature prominent names in the industry such as Anjo Bolarda, Ronyel Compra, and Wyndelle Remonde. Another panel discussion is also slated to take place during the event and will be moderated by UP Fine Arts faculty and curator Prof. Jay Nathan Jore. The panelists for the discussion Painting the Human Form include Emmanuel Garibay, Golda King, and Jun Impas as they talk about the use of the human figure in artistic depictions. All of the art talks will take place on the 12th floor of the Oakridge Studio in the Main Exhibition Area.
Aside from just facilitating insightful discussions through its art talks, the Visayas Art Fair 2022 will also serve as a platform for artists to hone and sharpen their skills through a series of interactive workshops that cover different artistic disciplines. On November 25, a watercolor painting workshop entitled Timelessness – Visayas in Watercolor will be headed by watercolor specialist Julianne Del Mar. On the next day, a sculpting workshop will be led by Kitty Taniguchi
called Future Forms. The Basics of Sculpting. The last art workshop for the weekend will be held on November 27, Printmaking: The Art of Serigraphy. The watercolor painting workshop will be conducted by Wyndelle Remonde. All art workshops will be at the Activity Area on the 12th floor of the Oakridge Studio. The VAF 2022 program committee will provide only 10 free kits of workshop materials for the first 10 participants to register onsite for every workshop on a first-come, first-served basis. Workshop kits are available to purchase onsite, as well.
Amidst the festivities, avid painters will also be given an opportunity to showcase their skills via an on-the-spot painting competition that will be held on November 27, the final day of the art fair. Registration for the competition will begin at 10:00 AM of that day and the actual painting competition will start at 11:00 AM. The awarding of winners will take place at 6:00 PM on the same day. Only student artists who are enrolled in courses under academic institutions within the Visayas Region who have access to the VAF 2022 – Day 3 Pass are qualified to participate in the painting competition. Artist exhibitors and professionals are not eligible to participate in the event.
The Fashion Institute of Design and Arts will also be presenting the latest collections from some
of the institution’s most prominent designers in a fashion show called ART x FASHION. Designers who will be participating in the fashion show include Philip Tampus, Mel Maria, Edwin Alba, Valerie Alvez, Ia Coca, Jeanom Ursua, Yoko Sato, Johanna Tan, Jad Solito, Rachel Rama, Sheena Si, Hannah Callano, and Ayka Lim. The fashion show will take place on November 26 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Main Exhibition Area on the 12th floor of Oakridge Studios.
The VAF 2022 will also hold a premiere of Duwa-Duwa, “The Play,” a debut film by Boholano filmmaker Nena Jane Achacoso. The film stars Alex Gallardo and Neolita Sarabia and features the writing of Des Suarez along with the musical score of Odoni Pestelos. The film was selected as an official entry for Cinemalaya 18.
